For small animals (dogs/cats), deliver a high-acceptance ODF with reliable 15–45 s breakup, weight-based segmentation, and tear-resistance with minimal debris.

Approach

Matrix: PVA/HPMC with thicker films (60–120 µm) for tear resistance.

Masking: strong masking (resinate + inclusion) + meaty flavors 1–2% with antioxidants.

Process: rounded die-cuts to reduce adhesion; unit blisters.

Methods: As above, plus puncture/tear testing; disintegration profiled under low/medium/high “saliva volume” conditions.

Disintegration: Medians 22 s / 28 s / 34 s across low/medium/high saliva, all ≤ 45 s (n = 30).

Dissolution (model API): 5 min 82% ± 7%; 10 min 94% ± 4%.

Mechanics: Puncture force 3.1 N; tear energy +25% vs. 60 µm control; tensile 17 MPa; elongation 55%.

Stability (6 mo accelerated): Assay 96–104%; meaty volatile loss < 10%; no rancidity; peel force 3–5 N; no blocking.

Outcome & Value

Markedly improved acceptance and field dosing control; segmentation/multi-strip regimens enable accurate mg/kg dosing.
